One thing I thought of that would help imply the mothers presence is a folded pile of laundry on his bed, Or chair? It could help with the cluttered look too.
Also, I'm glad we can see the colors now that you have posted these up. I still see more saturation, maybe use the references from Iron Giant you had for suggestions. More blues, keep in mind the characters colors as well...
