Main Characters: Sam & Alma

Here are the two main characters very close to final form. I have changed Alma quite a bit from the original concept. I kept the Heart face, features low, changed the dress and hair for a more exotic look. I think she looks better now. What to do you guys think? Sam's shoes, I will change and post up again. For now I will focus on the other characters and come back to these by the weekend.

These 2 designs are really nice overall. I particularly appreciate that you've created distinct differences in the head shapes and spatial relationship of the features. Sam looks like a happy, outgoing boy and Alma looks like a sweet, yet shy girl. Quite honestly, I wouldn't change much at all from what you have already. My one comment might be regarding Sam's feet. Glancing back and forth between the 2 characters, it strikes me that his feet may be overly long to work alongside Alma's design. Also, that may prove to be a problem when you're animating them, however, the best way to test that out is to try a bunch of rough sketches of him in action to see how it looks first. Perhaps it might help to change them to sneakers too, which would be more likely footwear on a young boy.

Again, these are just suggestions that you may consider and ultimately discard. These characters are already highly appealing visual designs and they seem quite conducive to fun, personality-driven animation. Great work!

Thank you Peter... I will work on them and post them up as soon as I can. We are planning to change the girl quite a bit, she looks too proper to everyone.

I don't think you need do a complete overhaul of Alma's design. The dress and body shape could be revised a bit, perhaps, but I think the face type is working marvelously. The heart-shaped head shape, whether consciously planned or not, is really cute. Also, I really like the feeling of shyness she has, with the demure little mouth and the features all placed low on the head. She puts me in mind of the character of "Winnie Cooper" on the 80's TV show, "The Wonder Years". One small suggestion: You might want to raise her braids by a notch to keep them in the clear and not forming a tangent with her shoulders. Be advised, too, that the polka dots on her dress are going to be trickier to maintain than if she were just wearing a solid colour.

This revised Alma design is also quite good, though a word of caution on the one big ponytail. Because of the extremely narrow cartoon proportions of the shoulders and neck, the broad ponytail at quick glance gives an unfortunate optical illusion of resembling a beard! I'd suggest either keeping the braids you had originally, or substituting twin, slimmer ponytails in their place. The new dress seems better and more flattering than the first one.
